I'm not an expert in the series - I don't have a dollar, only a couple of the fractional pieces - but here's my understanding.
On a VG coin, the pillars, globes and portrait will appear as nearly-featureless silhouettes.
Most of the fine detail, except on the high points, would still be visible on a VF specimen.
