Hello everyone, I'm rather new to coin collecting. I'm surprised how addicting this hobby turns out to be. Its like treasure hunting with every box, roll, and coin you touch, with some pretty good rewards so far as well. I got a question, if anyone will let me in on the secret, if there is one. How do people end up with multiple, even rolls of proof coins? I've looked on the mint pages etc, but haven't seen how they are available except yearly sets? Have I overlooked something, or misunderstood where to get them? Thanks for any help or advice!

Either that or some dealers/prominent people may have a deal with the mint to get some. Cracking seems most likely though

Personally, I don't see a reason to collect rolls of proof coins- they will get banged up in rolls- touching other coins- and they are so plentiful that I see no market for impaired proofs.

I was cherry picking coins from a friend's dealership and I saw them dump lincoln wheat proofs in with the regular wheats when they came in. It was a little startling at first to see that as the two types of coins have very little in common... but that's what this particular dealer thinks about loose proofs.

My dealer will put loose proof coins in with the junk silver. He figures that if it wouldn't grade well as a proof coin due to handling and dings, then it only has value for its silver content.

I should clarify my reasoning for asking. I wanted to give my step son, and a few of my young cousin's each some proofs, cents, quaters, halves ect, each in their own protective case, but did not want to buy entire yearly sets. I know I can buy individuals at online sites, but thought it would be nice to hand pick the one's I gave, not what someone sent me.

On occasion at coin shows I see dealers that have a clearance-type box or basket with individual proof coins in 2x2 flips, marked down. That's how I've built my single proof collection.
