Probably oil, not grease. Grease strike-through coins often have a deeper effect, which cause the beads or other devices to be absent. They use oil a fair bit on modern presses, and in some series of coins, you always find the strike-throughs in the same spot.

Is that because the oil drips onto the coin in the same spot as the presses are running...?
