Can someone tell me why are coins from seller moderncoinmart on ebay sell higher than others? What's with the barcode and the white encasing? Do they make it themselves? Looking at all their coins, they are all in those casing so I guess they make them... but why would that increase the value?

Maybe I should just do the same and add my own barcode?

Third party graded coins usually sell for more than coins that are not graded, though there is debate on the validity of grading NCLT.

Looking at their sales in the past 15 days, I see a few that sold for less than I would have thought. For example, a 2012 Niobium wolf for $103.50 USD - that's significantly below issue price. 2012 dragon privy SMLs selling for the same as they are at Colonial and 2012 High relief Portrait selling for 85$ when the issue price was 130$. And so on and so on.

Can you cite a specific example of something you feel is selling higher than others?

(edited to add:)
It seems like all of his coins are NGC graded so this page will likely answer your questions about the packaging, bar coding etc. http://www.ngccoin.com/news/Benefit...Grading.aspx

Thanks for the info CC. I mean I can understand grading for circulated or older coins, but for NCLT they come close to perfect and all encapsulated.

AS for examples : I remember some of the niobium wolf selling close to $200.. right now for the dino people are bidding higher on his than some buy it now which is hard for me to understand...

There is a significant population of collectors, largely coming from the pure numismatic side, that prefer their coins slabbed (in what I still feel are plastic coffins). This group of collectors understand that it takes additional time and money to slab coins, and this factors into their decision to pay (ridiculously) higher amounts for slabbed coins.

I also think that moderncoinmart have likely established a customer base that follows its auctions. All it takes is two buyers that did not take the time to check out what the going rate for a coin, or that are loyal to the seller to a fault, to drive up the prices.

These "going rates" for coins are all based on graded coins. Its something we cannot escape. A "graded" dollar with a huge mintage that has been pulled out of a regular bank roll and sent for grading could fetch 10x face value just because its "graded"
