This question is directed for Berry, but please anyone feel free to respond. Why is an 05 $1 marine corp commemorative uncir going for $40-50 in ms69 (ngc and pcgs), but just $85 to approx $100 in ms70 (ngc only)? Is it that NGC throws out 70 grades too easily? By the way, I am getting these numbers from recent ebay transactions. When is a 70 coin typically a good deal or what premium is reasonable? Thank you in advance.

First, you must understand that my opinion is biased against buying 70's under any circumstances.

Your theory about NGC is correct. Consider: they've graded 9178 of the coin you mention. 5410 are 70's, 3753 are 69's and only 15 graded lower than that. The additional point needs to be made that Mint quality has reached a point where 70's simply aren't all that rare any more - they're that good.

In truth, I believe the premium for an NGC 70 as you describe is probably still excessive, in anybody's slab, for any coin minted in the last few years.

Hi jeff46, SuperDave has given you the facts and figures and then when it comes to deciding on 69 versus 70, it becomes an individual thing. I do buy some 70 graded things, but only when I get them at a bargain, otherwise I stay with 69 for my personal stuff. Incidentally, virtually everything I have in slabs, I have in raw coins as well. I love to pick-up the coin and roll it around looking at it through a glass and enjoy the beauty of the coin. To me the 2005 USMC 230th Anniversary Coin is one of the premier commemorative coins put out by the mint. I certainly like it more that the 2006-P Rev Prf ASE.

NGC does grade more 70 coins than PCGS, and the trade off comes when you compare prices, it shows. If you can afford 70 coins, buy away, if not, 69 coins are excellent coins to have, but the old competitiveness is that, "it is not a 70" and I want the best. Decide what you want and then be patient and good deals will turn up for both grades and both TPGs as well.

As a point of interest, over the last 8 months a great deal of the USMC coins have been purchased by current and former Marines. They are a proud lot.... A last note jeff46, look at the mintage figures for the 2005 USMC coin as well. Almost 3 times as many Proofs as BUs.

Hi Jeff,
It is my opinion that the only difference between a coin graded ms-69 and ms-70 is the opinion of the grader that graded it. And I do not believe his or her opinion is worth the huge premium you have to pay between the two grades.I also do not believe there is a perfect coin however that said, some people are willing to pay for the difference and they do believe because it came from a top TPG it must be worth it at least that is the way lit seems to me.

The only "70"s I have are ANACS that would probably grade 69 or less at PCGS/NGC (just my guess; they my be okay). BUT, I got them at low 69 PCGS/NGC pricing so I don't consider them a loss. And, I know they are not fake.
