I bought a proof of the mountain goat for spot few weeks ago. I did not realise that Alaska had it's own mint but I looked it up in the state code and it appears to be legit. Does any body else collect these? The prices seem rather steep.

Now I am wondering if I could sell mine for a profit. I'll probably keep it because it seems interesting.

My research shows the Alaska Mint is a private jewelry store that make medallions: http://www.alaskamint.com/about.html

I have three of them, AR. Two depict moose and I believe the other is a game fish; maybe a salmon. You're right, though. Some of the limited release proofs are very pricey. My most recent one, see below, was $51, or about $17 over spot. But I was glad to get it at that price since I've seen the same coin sell for ~$100. Alaska Mint has one for sale for $200.

I guess the term I should use would be authorized by the State of Alaska:

The fish is the salmon its a fish the the natives of Alaska depend on to survive through the bitter cold winters same with the moose I've lived in this state just about 3 years now its an amazing state and that being said that coin is amazing I gotta go to the mint and see if I can get one because its a good memory of a place I don't wanna be in during the winter months

I'll also say another thing when it comes to Alaska everything is overpriced here I mean everything ill give you an example a gallon of milk in anchorage is like over 5 dollars more then a gallon of gas in other parts you could pay double or triple that and I've seen a case of the cheapest adult beverage go for about 100 dollars

Alaska is the one state out of the 50 that I'd most like to knock off my bucket list someday; preferably in the summer.

Yeah, I have never been there but I would like to go some day. My grandparents went a few years ago and loved it. My parents have been out to Unalaska for work and have the same complaints about the price of food. I also have a great uncle who goes up there to gold mine for his retirement. He loves it up there.

I just wish that it was like in the old days when you didn't need a passport as I wouldn't mind doing the drive up there through Canada in the Summer.

Yeah its a nice place to visit during the summer I do gold planning also I'll post a pic of my findings I also had the opportunity to work out at Shemya island its the second to last island in the chain just about 300 miles from Russia and in the winter time the weather will change in the blink of an eye nice calm day to snow 80+ mph winds but I did do one thing out there I'll remember forever is jumping in the baring sea and run to the other side of the island and jump in the pacific

Technically, the salmon is not a game fish. It is a "food fish".

The steelhead trout, however, IS a game fish!

Alaska is gorgeous, and one huge untamed piece of real estate. Everyone that loves the outdoors should take the bus/van trip through Denali to possibly see Mt. McKinley, and see all kinds of wildlife enroute. I have the Bald Eagle Alaska medallion as a souvenir of the trip, paid about $40 when silver was still under $10/oz. It's my reminder of my trip up there.

Nice one Daniels. Thanks for sharing! I try to get out gold panning when I can but I never find anything like that.
