It took me a bit just to figure out what happened to this dime.

I bought a 1973 mint set which arrived yesterday and noticed that the P dime was purple/blue. Aww, it was exposed to the air. I noticed on the reverse side that it looked like something like a small file had cut notches in the rim.

Anyway, it was nagging at me to figure out what happened. Pulled it out and this time looked at the obverse. Wait! That looks like something had almost clipped a piece off. Cool. Mid clip.

Edit: Also, it comes out of the envelope almost totally silver and in a matter of five to ten minutes it's turning more purple and dark blue.

Looks like a damaged coin, from when they put it in the cello pack sometimes the sealer hits the coins. Just a guess.. someone else had a thread about this but I cant remember who or when. The toning I have no clue.

I can see that the crimper could do that. Now I don't know whether to see it as interesting or send it back.

The package sealer try to seal over the edge of the coin. It is now damaged. But from the wrapping at the mint. No premium though.

I took another picture and this one came out much better. I decided to put a plastic bag in front of my light source and it took a lot of the glare off. It's a little washed out but by far the best I've been able to do.

To me, mine doesn't look like those others. Mine has what looks like a slice (like clipping) on one side whereas those others look pretty much the same on front and reverse where the crimper hit the coin.

I'm not entirely doubting that it happened when the coin was in the cellaphane, but the cell for the coins in this package are all sealed. So my coin was hit or whatever but it wasn't in the crimp zone. The cellaphane has a jagged hole(s) on the reverse side and a clean cut on the obverse side that is the same length as the clip looking area on the coin.
