I've been trying to update my 1795 Large Cent and see a few that have planchet clips. For example this one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/35056965411....m1438.l2649Does this reduce the value of the coin? As usual I appreciate the opinions of the forum experts. Member ANA and EAC "You got to lose to know how to win". Dream On by Aerosmith

My opinion is YES. A little is normal on some really old coinage. But that one is a bit to excessive for me.

I going to agree with both of the above. I dont think all of them do but that one is extreme so in this case I would say yes

On moderns it improves it, but on classics, I would say it reduces value to me.

I consider a clip a mint defect and wouldn't include one in a set of normal coins. If you did buy this coin I can see you not being happy with it as it won't look "right" amongst the other coins in your set. If you collect clipped coins then it would be a nice addition to that collection. Ed ANA LM-3175

Thanks everyone for your opinions on the 1795. Quote: If you did buy this coin I can see you not being happy with it I didn't buy it but did come across a nice 1794 and bought it instead. That's what happens when you have so many coins that need updating. I'll start watching 1795 auctions again while I try to get some $ together.

i would prefer a "whole" coin, so for me, a planchet clip degrades the coin's quality but it's how this coin was minted and I can certainly appreciate the history of it. It still gets a !

I say that a clip on the Large Cents reduces value: they are common, so most collectors will go for a complete coin that shows as much detail as possible. Small clips are often seen as problems. On another note, I saw a 1877 Indian Head cent with a rim clip. Seller tried listing it for a huge premium because of this and I saw it on the market for over a year. Now, maybe the 3 people in the world building a complete set of Indian cents with errors on them would want it, but seems like no one else bit.

The way I looked at it is if I was at a coin show and I needed that coin and a dealer had that one. And it was the only one at the show, I'd still not buy that one.
