I ordered 3 map coins. I believe it is a good buy since:
* first one in the series * mintage at 6,000 * irregular shape * coin dealer is jacking up the price right away
The second in the series will be issued by the end of the year and it will be an Emu...

I picked up 5 map coins myself I think they will be the best seller of the set being the first one and all.
Also there are only 64 left at the mint another first day sell out will happen very soon on this one.

I had a look at these map coins and quite frankly they don't ring any bells for me. IMHO they are simply a bullion bar in the shape of Aus and are simply an oddity not a coin. Don't get me wrong I enjoy most of the NCLT coins from RAM and the Perth Mint but these are just absurd. Round ,square or rectangular silver is fine but this

I guess you haven't checked out the hot RCM stuff. We Canadians seem to be drawn to oddities: A Maple Leaf form factor with an engraved painting on it (Two Loons) that is sold as a dollar A glow-in-the-dark dino skeleton. A glass ladybug or bumblebee attached to a painted flower. This map coin is definitely waaaay out there. Although, isn't it based on the 2010 Expo release?

I like the Manta ray...looks nice and different. But at 10 coins a month, I think they are well on the way to saturating their market.

Quote:your right trout, scalpers already have them on ebay at marked up prices, I have been watching this scenario going on in Canada and if it gets entrenched in Aus it will be bad news for NCLT collectors here. The dealers and the flippers will clean out the mint on new releases and slowly "release" these coins at an inflated rate if this happens

The RCM has a Master's Club. A buyer is automatically enrolled and kept enrolled if they purchase CAD$1000 or more of product a year. In addition to free shipping, MC members get a 1-2 weeks to purchase some offerings before the general public (but after dealers). The result is some hot items are sold out before the general public gets a chance, and perhaps even before they even know about it. There are generally limits on low mintage RCM offerings. Perhaps the Perth Mint needs to introduce limits. For Canada, 6000 would be a somewhat but not extraordinarily low mintage. With US next door, even a small demand from the US can be a significant factor.
