having a terrible time identifying this lapel pin and thought someone might have come across a similar one in their travels. it reads:

There are several "ghost" records that come up in Google searches (past items cataloged by Google which have been removed from their original website) which hint that this may be some kind of promotional pin for the NY Journal-American, which cease publication in 1966.

Exactly right. The NY Journal and American was a Hearst-owned tabloid paper from the late 19th Century until 1966.

It changed its name to the Journal-American in 1941, so your pin probably dates pre-1941. Most likely for some promotion to sell more newspapers during the Depression.
