Okay, so I have another question for you PM collectors/ocd silver loving junkies. Over the past year I have built up a large supply of silver but I have yet to test the waters and purchase any gold. So now that I am interested in expanding on the gold side, I was curious, what would ya'lls thoughts be about purchasing small 1 to 2.5 grams Pamp Suisse Gold Bars? I don't have the income to purchase much larger so I was thinking I would purchase 1 to 2.5 grams a month to build a small collection to diversify my PM's....Thoughts or suggestions..... As always, thanks in advance... Edited by jcd390 06/06/2012 8:31 pm

I think it would be wiser to save your money each mont until you have enough to buy a full ounce. The premiums on fractional bars can be quite high.

Pamp Suisse, much like Engelhard and JM bars, command some of the highest premiums out there. And especially crazy high on the fractional offerings, for the reason you stated: more people can afford 1 or 2.5 grams of gold than a full Oz. You're simply competing with so many more potential buyers.
My advice: save up and buy a bigger piece of the fractional pie.
But no one can ever blame you for not having discerning taste in PM bars, jc. ;)

I have been thinking the same thing as the OP lately. But when you calculate the premium on the 1-2.5 gram bars, it is not worth it. You'll be in the $2000 per oz range. I don't think the premium will carry through if gold goes up near $2000.
Also, the silver-to-gold ratio is right near 55.5/1. With the premium attached to the 1 gram bar, I can buy 2 oz of silver. Since I am buying generic bullion rounds and bars with a $1.25 premium, I figure that premium should hold up to around $40-45 per oz. After that the premium will probably come off but I will be up $10-15 per oz anyway.

What about saving up and buying 1/2 or 1/4 oz gold maples?

They aren't cheap, but APMEX has 1/2 ounce gold maples for only $20 over spot per coin. Last I looked, this was a better value than any of the 1 t oz Au coins currently available for sale. This deal won't last but APMEX runs special pricing on fractional coins from time to time. I suspect the other major online dealers might offer similar specials, too.

Premiums matter not if you are smart when selling them. So my advice is to just buy what you can afford and what you find interesting.

Pamp has very low premiums compared to Sovereign Mint Coins. I think having a variety of size bars is smart and if you look at the 10 gram bar it's a pretty good premium compared with the 1 ouncers.
Do not buy fractional Eagles/Maples as the premiums are sky high. Pamp is a much better deal.
