So my kids have been watching me track and buy silver lately and they have decited they want to get in on the action as well. They don't have money to buy full ounces so we have been looking at some fractional silver. I was just wondering if some of them are better than others. Mostly, are they any that should be avoided. I usually buy SilverTowne, but 1 oz is the smallest they sell. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Small silver coins US and dark side would be the cheapest option and might even spark an interest in the coins themselves for the kids.
A lot more fun for the kids as the coins have a "known" silver content and they can enjoy looking at the silver price and work out what their coins are worth by improving their maths skills.
Triple winner.
Silver, interesting coins and a bit of a maths workout.

Older coins are the ticket for small bits of silver. Anytime I've seen fraction silver bullion, the price per ounce gets really high.

That can of course be too much of a math workout if you choose the wrong coins.
Like the Venezuelan 50 centimos "GR 2.5 LEI .835" - now what's that equal to?

But yeah, get them a Mercury dime or two (I'm not sure if Barber dimes can be had for melt, but if yes then that too).

I take me kids to the flea market every Sunday and they buy junk US or Canadian silver with their allowance. They are hooked and now go hunting the neighbor hood for cans and bottles for extra money for more silver.

Pre 64 would be the best way to go. I find the 999 fractional bullion has too high of a premium. They might be more shiny and new, but the value isn't there.

I agree with vinny. I'd go with pre-64 silver as the premium will be low compared to fractional silver. At least in my experience it has been cheaper. Best of luck.

terrific idea! can't wait to emulate when my boy's old enough to be taught.

my vote is with pre-64 silver as well. Bullion fractional silver really ain't worth their price. Pre-64 silver also have a history aspect to it that your children may become attached to.

yep! Pre 68 Canadian and pre 64 American junk silver is the right way to go. http://www.currencydebasement.com is an awesome site if you need one.

When they get enough junk together, take it to the next step. Sell and turn it into .999 and repeat. Would be a fun process. Cheers!

Excellent! Good job on getting them interested in silver collecting. Most of us have not had the success there that we would like.

As to what to collect, I agree with the general sentiment here. US pre-1965 90% silver dimes, quarters, halves, and dollars are the way to go. Flea Markets, garage sales, and estate sales can sometimes turn up really good buys. You could even do a group buy with your kids with them getting part of the purchase and you getting the rest. Any way it goes, this is going to be great!

Have to agree the pre-64 coins would be a great option. You can buy one at the LCS. It would be fun for them to go with you the next time you make a purchase. Then let them purchase a dime or quarter or whatever the have money for. They will pick up on lots of life skills with you doing that.

Perhaps 40% Ikes would be good, too. Nice and big to look at besides being affordable.

Thanks for all the input, looks like 90% may be the way to go. All the kids already roll hunt with me and we have been working on some Danscos, zero luck on pulling any silver yet though. They just fell in love with the flash of the new silver bars :)

I Totally with others above!
90% US silver dimes, quarters, halves are the way to go.
A set of 90% FDR silver dimes, 1946-1964, is affordable and they can buy a few at time for lower cost.
Silver dollars will cost almost same as 1 oz of .999, but only contain 3/4 oz
I been collecting some .999 fractional bullion and it does have a high premium.
This person on ebay {its not me} has the best deal if you do want a 999 FINE SILVER ROUND of 1/2 TROY OUNCE,
but as you can see it comes out to paying $39 oz when spot price is under $30!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/33067225767....m1423.l2649

PS> I am looking for a 1/2 oz 'ENGELHARD BAR', if someone has one!

Yeah but there is something pretty special about those Morgans!

I keep my eyes peeled all the time for those, especially if I can get them for spot or slightly higher and in good or better condition. Good deals don't come along all that often but they do come up once in a while.
