I work at a facility that has probably close to 1000 employees. They have a weekly swap sheet on our local intranet where people can post items for sale or things they're looking for. I've been watching it for a couple months looking for anyone selling coins, but nothing yet. I finally decided instead of waiting for them, that I'll ask them to come to me. If I advertise that I'm looking for silver coinage and pre-memorial cents, what are appropriate prices to pay? Should I offer spot, a little under, a little over? Obviously I want to pay as little as possible, but I do work with these people and even if I don't know them personally, they know where to find me. I'm not necessarily looking for rarities, I just want to fill the many remaining holes in my silver albums if I can, and stash the rest for if/when silver goes back up. Also, what are fair prices for rolls of unsearched wheat cents?

Thanks guys for any feedback.

Most wheat backs pennies are usually going for less than $.05 apiece. However there are a number of such coins that do command some money. If you don't have a current Red Book, I would buy one that you could keep in your work station for reference should the need arise.

The nice thing about this reference book is that it does give some idea as to how to grade a coin.

One of the things that I have run across is that most non-collectors usually vastly over value what they have. So having a reference book available at work could go a ways towards educating your co-workers who have questions.

Silver is a whole different question so figuring out a purchase cost of so much times face should stand you in good stead.

You should offer the current silver melt value for the coins. (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed has a web site that lists the melt value of the coins, but I think it includes the non silver metal too, which shouldn't be included in the price, since dealers don't include it. Just offer the silver value and that would be fair. Better than what a dealer would offer.

Offering a certain amount per face is good, but if silver moves quickly, that can be outdated quickly.
