It appears to have been squeezed together with another cent in a vise.

This is what is commonly known as a "squeeze job"

So since we're all in agreement that it's a squeeze job, let me ask a question here. In theory the two coins squeezed together would be made of the same material, thus exhibiting the same metallurgical properties (e.g., hardness). How is it that one was able to impress so cleanly a mirrored image of "liberty" and "in god" on the other? Is it due to possible higher density of the material in the letters and lower density of the material in the field?

Unfortunately it's been a long time since my Mechanics of Materials classes. :(

It was really odd getting this in change. I may be a woman but I watched my dad for years exhibition his coins all over the place and learned quite a bit, and I know the copper penny is harder and more bold coin than the zinc coin so that's how you would get that imprint... but the back has not a scratch.
