I was looking at some quarters at a local coinshop the other day and noticed a few that had a lot of lustre and th esurfaces looked nice ( not under a scope but just a 10X loupe ) but the sides were pretty black. I presumed it was from being in an album or being cleaned - not sure which.

I also have read about sonic cleaning as well as dipping and scrubbing. Just curious if there is a "guide to spotting cleaned coins" out there. I kinda "know em when I see em" but don't really know the difference between scrubbed and whizzed and sonic etc. etc. or what they look like differently in pics.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think there is any "Easy Reference" besides years and years of experience looking at coins. I have sent raw coins to PCGS that I could swore were original and came back as improperly cleaned. The safest way to value a raw coin is to just assume its been cleaned.

Yup. It is a popular topic.

I agree with Travis, experience is key. The more we talk about it, the better we are.
