Was at the Eaton center Chapters earlier today. Happened to see that they have the 2012 Charlton Guide for dealers, as well as another one on Canadian coins. So I flipped through it a bit and noticed that some of the quotes in the book do not nearly reflect the market at all. For example, the buying price for the nuthatch is $5, market value of it is $150.

Aside from the price, I also notice the discrepancies between the guide and the mint report. For instance, mint report says about 3,722 for 'the Sun', the guide says some 1,278, which is a huge difference.

Should one rely on the mint report more or the Charlton guide? I was thinking about purchasing one of these guide books, but after this, I'm not sure any more.

In terms of mintage figures, the Charlton Guide doesn't necessarily have the latest or final mintages of the most recent coins when it goes to press. They publish the info they have and then update the numbers when final figures become available via the RCM Annual Report. For example, it is not uncommon for the most recent coins to have their mintage listed as the published maximum mintage the first time the coin appears and then have the mintage figure updated later to reflect the actual sales.

In terms of prices, it's very difficult for annually-published books to keep up with the daily dynamics of an active market. They gather what data then can prior to publication and list values based on the information they collect. It's always better to use more often-updated sources for current pricing than annual guide books.

I purchase these catalogues for all the valuable information they contain - but not for pricing. If you find inaccuracies then you can write to the editor and they will be glad to investigate and make the corrections.

For pricing, I personally refer to the latest transactions on ebay.

Thanks! It was my first time reading a Charlton and I am sure it's got its merits since most people do buy them and rely on them

This is the Charlton Coin Guide pretty much a useless waste of money
This is a Charlton Standard Catalogue a must have for all collectors, choose Vol.1 or 2 as suits your area of interest.

^Same here, although I haven't yet bothered with the NCLT version since it is growing so rapidly.

The NCLT catalogue is really beautiful. Even if you don't collect them, the pictures are really superb and good info.

Funny how few coins that are collected actually circulate anymore. Pennies, small and large, silver 5 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents nickel and silver, nickel and silver dollars...

Evolution.
