Hello everyone, this is my first time posting here and I have come for help. A long time ago my grandfather gave me a silver dollar made in 1886 it was a hundred years old when he gave it to me at birth. When my parents split my dad was allowed to have it till I was 18. I am now almost 21 and I haven't seen them since. We are trying to find out the approx. value of the coin so that if we have to sue him for them we know the price. I generally wouldn't care if the coin didn't carry great sentimental value as my grandfather has been dead for years now.

If anyone could help me or at least point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Welcome to Coin Community, Azuri. There's absolutely no way to estimate the value of a coin without seeing it - a circulated, average 1886 Morgan from the Philadelphia mint is only worth about $15, while a pristine, unmarked 1886 from the San Francisco mint could be worth thousands.

Hi, Azuri, welcome.

I'm afraid you can't possibly receive a precise value without knowing the condition of the coin. Also, one would need to know where it was minted. Without trying to confuse you, many people collect variants of these coins, some of which are worth a lot more than others.

But assuming it was the most common 1886 type and assuming it was circulated (handled, worn), the base value is $15 - $25.

I do hope you recover a piece of your past.
