I bought a couple packs of 100 notes to give the kids for Christmas one year and while peeking through them looking for star notes I found a cutting error. The note is uncirculated and has been in a currency sleeve since I found it.

Can anyone tell me what the proper name is for this type of error is and what an approximate retail value might be?

Pretty sure it's called a butterfly error or butterfly fold. Retail value? Probably around $50.

Nice find!

Pretty cool butterfly error note!

Hard to find a value on it, but it might be worth more than $50.

Nice one! Just don't handle to much. I would place it in a Currency Sleeve to save "wear and tear" on the fold.

Most banks will have crisp uncirculated straps( a wrapped bundle of 100 consecutive serial number notes) available. If your local bank does not have them, check to see if your bank has a commercial branch nearby.

Yep, got them from my local bank. Sometimes they have them and sometimes they don't. You just have to ask the head teller if he/she can get some for you.

most straps are uncirculated and consecutive numbered but this is not always the case but usually a big branch bank will have these in stock and are happy to give them to you for face value if you ask. If you can afford it then you really are not losing anything by getting them and looking through them as you just spend the ones you don't want to keep for the same amount as you have in them
