How do you tell a fake CSA note from a real one?

It seems the older you get in currency(and coins) the easier it might be to come across fakes.

CSA notes are of such crude design, that unless they are annotated as 'copy' or 'replica', it is very, very difficult for someone who is not quite familiar with Confederate currency to spot the fake.

CSA notes were printed in massive quantities since the CSA did not have any specie. Towards the end of the Civil War, inflation was rampant so that increased production as well. There are well-known replicas, typically with an aged parchment paper appearance that is nothing like a real note. Because of the printing issues, many genuine examples are quite affordable.

There are plenty of websites that list known serial numbers of replica notes. Most replica-makers are lazy and keep using the same numbers over and over again. This list has been around a while.

If your note's serial number is on this list, it's 100% fake. If it's not on the list, there's a reasonable chance (but by no means certain) that it's genuine.

Yes, the list is great, but not all inclusive. I have seen other lists for federal issues that relied on serial numbers as well as design irregularities to identify counterfeits (mainly contemporary counterfeits). I have also seen notes (not on theses lists) sell on ebay that were obvious counterfeits of more modern creation. It is far more profitable to counterfeit collectible notes today than it was back in the day.

One way to tell if it is a fake is by feeling the paper and looking at the ink
