This coin was given to me 20 years ago and sat in a drawer until found again during a recent move. I have assumed it is worth the melt value only but want to verify whether others agree. I am an utter novice so any advice is appreciated.

It has good clean fields and is at least AU in condition and could be MS it should bring in more than just melt price.

A common date but nice grade. That one would be worth sending to a TPG., big price jumps when it comes to Uncirculated gold above MS-62. Your coin appears to have very little bag marking and scuffs.
Rest in Peace

Can you take pictures of it under better lighting? I agree, from these pics it looks possibly MS, maybe as high as 63 or 64.....but it's hard to tell with the lighting. I see fairly strong luster bands and few scuffs. You definitely want to handle this one with care(cotton gloves), and do not attempt a cleaning.

I agree it looks very nice and will probably grade MS as I do not see any rubs on the high points and the fields look very clean.

Very nice coin! Probably at least a high AU with a good possibility of MS.

If you plan on keeping that, I suggest a 2x2 for safety of the coin. If your planning on selling it, you really should look up on how to send to a place like PCGS or NGC for grading and slabbing and authenticating.

nice coin broseph. def higher then melt, PCGS AU 55 if you ask me, even maybe MS 60. melt is 820, get it slabbed and you are looking at maybe a 900-1k coin to the right dealer.
