No responses in a month. Hmmph, I was just about to post a question about this detector as well, so maybe I'll just piggyback it onto this topic to get an answer to both of our questions and give it a bump.

My question is, I can pick one of these up free using my points from Holiday Inn. Bounty Hunter Lone Star. I read some reviews and they seem pretty good. Just curious if it's worth it. It would be my first detector.

Bounty Hunters are just barely "OK", though I have not tried them all.

My friend uses one, while I easily discriminate and find 20 or so bullion coins, he finds NOTHING, just larger scrap and crap.

I have tried it a few times and have ZERO confidence in them.

You would be better off with a proper brand name detector, like Tesoro, Minelab, Whites, most Fishers, Deus etc.

Please save your money or by a used one.

The only thing they are good for is keeping people out of the hobby, they get used once or twice, then stuck in a closet.

I also have a Fisher 1210x, which is an old machine from the eighties, it is ten times the machine of the Discovery 1100.

If you get a Bounty Hunter, good luck your going to need it. You would have similar results randomly digging with a dowsing rod.

They thing just randomly beeps and is next to impossible to "X" your target, the beeps are not repeatable.

It barely works in open air, forget about the ground.

Bounty Hunter's are good basic machines for the person new to MDing, but most people tire of them quickly and move on to better machines. If you watch ebay, there are a ton of used Bounty hunters for sale because they don't find as much as more sophisticated detectors and active Md'ers want to find more deep
"stuff" than the BH is capable of. I have a used White's MXT and used Garret AT Pro, both bought off E-bay at a substantial savings over retail and have a lot more fun and find a lot more good targets with these. If I were looking for a MD right now, I'd look White's, Garrett, Fisher at a reasonable cost and Minelab if cost were not a consideration.

I agree, my buddy has almost got tired of his, although I don't see him getting a better one.

The first one he bought from Radio Shack was a $90 Micronta job, this thing was completely worthless, I won't even get into how bad it is, you may as well toss $90 into the wind. He insisted to me that it will work fine, he was so proud and was going to show me a thing or two. lol, it failed surface tests. It was comical really.

I finally got him talked into getting a better one, I recommended a nice used one, but we would have to drive all over the place to get one. So he settled for the $200 Bounty Hunter from the local Canadian Tire. At least it "works" somewhat, but it's still a terrible machine, I mean it's 2012, come on.lol

So now he has over $300 invested (with taxes). He could have easily had a "proper" machine for the money, like an ace 250 or even better used machine.

I don't see him buying a third, he's more of a quitter lol, frankly I was shocked when he bought the first one. I'm tired of explaining to the cheapskate, horse to water...

lol, he's the type of guy who buys individual cans of pop from the store on a daily basis. Penny wise, pound poor. For the price of 3-4 cans of pop, he could have a case of name brand soda.

Now, on the other hand, if you don't want people digging the goods in your area, recommend they get a Bounty Hunter, then go hit the area after they removed some of the trash.

He did find one junk ring, after a few weeks, for comparison though he found two rings in twenty minutes using my Lobo.(One junk and a Silver toe ring)

Finding a ring is not too hard, the shape of the rings make them sound "big", finding coins proves extremely challenging for the BH. I don't think he has enough for a coffee yet. I stopped counting coins after a couple hundred.

In 2012 there is "no cheap metal detectors", $250 and up or buy used.

Having said that, if your handy with a soldering iron, you can by cloned kits, but you will need to wind the coil and assemble everything.
The Baracuda PI kit is a fairly easy build and can be set up with a multimeter, the Tesoro clones require the use of an scope to set them up.
