Not so easy to negotiate for PM's as we all look at spot price. And thanks to the price guide books and all, we all pretty much have a REAL solid idea what we can pay for an item and sell it later for, within say 10 or 15 bucks either way....

But many things in this world are viewed in far different levels of value, and often different big money investors feel they can spend more then their comp will, as maybe the genre in question is something they know well an have dealt in before....

New show on, and I know many of you watch far less T.V., then I, an hate when I use these examples but this show here is very interesting, via the world of big money investors an unique HIGH dollar items....

I can't even recall the name or channel right now but you all will know the show....

Four big time buyers, one seller with unique item. They decide which order to see each buyer in, and can NEVER go back to and old room and take and offer that seems way better later, then it did to begin with....

They have had Elvis's hair which sold for 7500, the Energizer bunny (1st model) sell for 20 grand. A giant bug collection for 5k, a very rare old 16th work of art, Tiffany lamp, Ansel Adams photos, I can go on and on....

O.k., most recently a lady brought in a Marylin Monroe dress which was the the dress she wore in her last film. No where as iconic as the 1 million plus dollar 7 year itch dress for example. She had RIDICULOUS expectations, via 1 million dollars....

This one guy her first to choose Billy is kind of nuts and gets real emotional often, immediately lost it an offered 5k, and she REFUSED rof, as she wanted 8 grand her bottom line. Guess what, next three rooms best offer was 1k, rof....

Let that greed be a lesson to her, as she said she was fine and may not sleep well tonight, but in time she knows she made the right move, WRONG! Keep lying to yourself I say....

The last guy who is Hollywood mem expert told her to put in prospective, the thriller original jacket, the most iconic piece known to pop culture and now legend, went for like 1.7 million or something....

Seems to me men are better negotiators then woman and here is why I feel that way. Woman set a price and refuse to BUDGE, when men are more realistic. Just my observation and I have even seen this in the PM world on ebay. And I know many of our lady members would be on the 180 degree opposite end of this spectrum, like Angel and Crystal perhaps. The only females I have eve seen post here that I recall. I certainly am opened minded and by no means a chauvinist pig and truly think a woman can do anything a man can, just my observation on one subject via a large percentage of females appear like unrealistic negotiators. But then again, many of these men Mike an Frank visit on Pickers are the same and refuse to budge to move anything....

The Hollywood expert told her real well, that she was gonna BURN that dress out. Said he sees it all the time, via too many setting such high expectations. Other collectors quickly see it did not sell and lose interest, and in essence the dress loses its steam and value....

Another new show Barter kings just two episodes old, wow these guys are GENIUS to say the least....

No one has cash, so they trade up on Craigslist. One dude started with massage table (300 value) and traded it to lady WANTING to start massage business for some Ping clubs (value 1200), as her old boy friend left her and she wanted to burn him, lol. He traded those clubs for like and espresso machine (value 2500). Then trade that to papaw an two grand kids WANTING to start new espresso business for a large advertisement balloon cold air (value 3500). Finally he traded that to get his set GOAL item, a souped up golf cart worth 7k. The guy need balloon for his business, and the gold course rich dude lived on would not allow his custom cart on the coarse....

Another guy used 6k worth of scrap gold he traded up to, to trade for 8k horse trailer which he traded a lady for a horse for his daughters birthday (value 8k)....

Sorry for the long winded rant, but felt it was worth sharing....

Finally, how do I negotiate for pm's, just simply offer the most I am comfortable paying below their asking price, and often I will find if you try this enough, you will find folks needing money and will sell for a good price below ridiculous buy it now's, for those that ebay like me anyway....

Curous to hear some other strategy's for negotiations....

Interesting post, as usual, Hawk. Due to my penurious nature, I tend to make fairly low offers when negotiating in any medium that allows such a thing. I also try to remain disciplined enough to walk away if I can't get my price. Same with ebay auctions. I like to shave off between 15-30%, depending on desirability, and will deal with the disappointment if I lose out, which is more than typical. On average, I will win only 1 in 20 auctions, but when I do win, I absolutely know I just got a great deal. By remaining vigilant, I've found that the deals regularly come to me, eventually.

Not that I'm a seller, but if the time ever comes to be one, I'll be better prepared to get a nice profit on my return. As a matter of course, I think it would be more difficult to do this will PM's, since sellers are savvy enough in this day and age to know how much one's product is worth and do not need to sell at a discount. So my strategy would be a waste of energy for buying silver at spot, but works much better with proof coinage.

Traevin we bid very much alike, even though I bet my like for an item or emotional factor causes me to cave a bit more often then yourself, but great plan you use there, and 1 out of 20 is not bad at all....

Like I always say, the player in the bar will take 1 out of 20 all day, lol....

Also, I forgot to mention the lady paid 57K for the dress on ebay, lol. I can't get past that paying 57k and thought it wise to pass on half a million, rof....

That is the definition of greed right there my friends....

Oh my...all I have to say is: know your market.

As many of you may have noticed, I'm in Mexico and as some of you know, I work on a fairly non-existant budget. Still, I keep a vigilent eye and have done okay. An example comes from the other day when I was able to pick up a some silver for about 55% of melt...and that was after the seller talked me up from my initial offer of 45% and wouldn't meet my 2nd counter offer of 50%.

Did I negotiate well? Maybe not...but I am still happy getting silver for about half of melt. :)

About twelve years ago we put an offer in on a house. She was asking $320k for it. The house had potential but wasn't worth nearly that much in my opinion given its condition. The house was just listed.

Anyway, we send in an offer of $280k and the next day we get the offer back, not with a higher price, but the words REJECTED written in red ink across the offer. Obviously, we walked. Months later (maybe 6) we're watching TV and the real estate ads come on, and there's the house, now listed at $275k. This was during a sellers market. We ended up making an offer on a house we'd previously seen at $299k, offered $232k and got it. BTW, we sold the house four years later for $386k, but that's another story.

Im finding it difficult to negotiate for PM's now adays. I have begun going to yard sales looking for old silverware to increase my PM hoard. I got really lucky last week and found what I think is Sterling silver buddha statue. It weighs about 12 troy ounces. I cant seem to find it anywhere on the internet though. Where is everyone else doing their buying in this dip in the silver market?

Real interesting find there on that Buddha statue SC, and if that is real sterling you better get it checked out as it may have value beyond all that silver weight. Got any pics?
