collectors have to make a choice between storage and display.
Also, we don't want to spend too much on either: we would rather spend our hard-earned on more coins.
Whenever one looks at supplies, it seems that our American friends are overwhelmed for choice.
A lot of us like to put individual coins in the 2x2 holders. These can then go into albums - large or small - great for display; but soon these become unwieldy, because the weight of the coins strains the binding mechanism.
It seems that the Americans often store (rather than display) some of their 2x2s in boxes. Boxes are marketed specifically for coins in 2x2s. And, I gather that the boxes are intended to keep the 2x2 vertical. I've never seen these boxes for sale in Australia.

A couple of years ago, I decided to look for an alternative to the purpose-marketed boxes. I have used slotted metal storage boxes, originally made for photographic 35mm slides - 35mm was the size of the film; but the slides are in fact 2x2. These are ok, but not readily obtainable.

Then, I noticed "tackle boxes" made for fishermen. These come in a wide variety of sizes and configurations. But the one I settled on was a very well-contructed plastic box, made by Plano of U.S.A. Model 3730 refers. It has four compartments, 50mm wide, 70mm deep, and 345mm long. Each box comes with several dividers which can be used in the compartments. Each box can hold a few hundred 2x2, and the dividers not only assist with classification, they also keep the 2x2 from flopping around. The boxes seem robust enough for a few to be stacked on others. The lid is hinged, and the box has two clips to keep it closed.

My one concern is, of course, whether the plastic material of the box might have issues for my coins. I don't know for sure, but nothing yet. The box has a recycling-triangle with the number "5" and letters "PP", which, I gather, means "Polypropylene". And, I gather, from previous CCF threads, that Polypropylene is OK for storing coins.

My point in raising this now is that Plano 3730 could be had at K-mart for $16 or so. Recently, however, I noticed that they are marked as "Clearance", and reduced to $9.00. So, if you're interested, get in quick ! (I bought six, for anticipated future requirements).

I have a couple of Lighthouse clear plastic boxes that hold 100 2x2's each, They cost me $15 each.
I use these to house some of my spares.
The rest of my coins live in 2x2 folders and dansco albums.
I am waiting on some more supplies to arrive in the mail so that I can take all my coins out of the dansco's and house them in 2x2 folders.

I get my 2x2s from a shop here in adelaide in a box of 100. They are lighthouse brand or $17.00. I have lots of the empty boxes after I've used the 2x2s and found the 2x2s with coins in the fit back in (just not 100).

on a side note I've just switched from staple 2x2's to self adhesive 2x2's because I found when taking coins out of the box they staples would catch on the coin in front and bring out more than I needed.

I have found that if you get smaller 3 ring binder albums, you can become more organized and reduce the weight of each. For example, with world coins, I use a half inch binder for each letter of the alphabet (for now). As my collection grows, I may have to find a new system, maybe an albulm for each country. You could take a similar idea for US coins, use an album for each year/type of coin/etc. Just an idea but they stay organized, lighter weight per album, and they are still very viewable for friends/family.

Juzzy: " I found when taking coins out of the box they staples would catch on the coin in front and bring out more than I needed."

- get yourself a "flat-clinch stapler", which uses ordinary staples but prevents catching as you describe.
There are several previous threads about staplers on CCF.
I got mine for about $9.00, at the Darwin branch of a national stationer, " SBA Office National".

Other contributors - thankyou all.

Australia has coinage? Even money? Didn't know they were that far advanced down there. Hope you know I'm kidding.
Not sure how the sytem works with Whitman Publishing but you could try contacting them. Request a catalog. It's very extensive on 2x2's, cardboard boxes for their storage. On page 53 in that catalog, they show different sizes and colors of those boxes from about $2.99 to $5.99 each.
What I mean by not knowing how it works with Whitman, but at coin shows I see those for a lot less in cost. I suspect that Whitman sells these items to dealers at a substantially low price but not sure. If you contacted them you might find you could purchase bulk quantities of these for much less and sell over there for a decent profit.
I usually use the 2 row, longer ones in Red and get them at coin shows for about $3.50 each.

Hey Carl,

I'll have you know that the majority of our native animals down here have evolved to have built in coin pouches.

The pouches even come in different sizes.
A Kangaroo has a much higher capacity then a Tasmanian Devil.
Thing is you money is a LOT safer with the Taz Devil.

yes; the internal dimensions are fine, but the pH concerns me - you'd have to be careful to make sure it didn't get moist.

I've always found that any of those boxes are OK for storage but lousy for knowing what you have. Once you get several of them, it becomes a problem to note what is in them. Unless you have a list of what is there. And then too, it would be a list that has to be changed every time you add or remove a coin. As an example I have 9 of those boxes full of 2x2's. If anyone asks me if I had a certain extra coin, I'd have to dig out all of them and start hunting. Of course I could put lables on each box but then too, it would have to be changed to often.

Pretty much. Each of my boxes/albums is labeled and each coin is noted in the software as being in a particular box/album.
