I re-read commems post, and got me thinking.

So I called and ordered one just now.

Oh, oh! The pressure for future value appreciation is on me now!

Let's hope it's a positive for all of us!

I got my stampede silver dollar today. Very nice! The silver coins always seem to look much better in real life than on RCM pictures.

Plus this is the only stampede coin that actually says "Calgary Stampede" on it!

This is no longer available at canadapost.ca. Same with the 5 oz.

I guess the stampede coins are more popular than we thought. Or else they're reserving a whole lot of them for the actual stampede.

Word is that the Stampede stocked up on a good number of these to sell during the 2-week-long event itself

Wowee. Thanks Commems.

I completely missed the mark on this one. I usually buy everything because I am not smart enough to know what will work or not. This time, I was sure this was a dud.

I agree with fkl118, the Stampede dollar does look better in person than it does on the RCM website.

One nice design feature that I did not pick up on via the RCM's image was the different strike characteristics/finishes on the horse. While the horse and rider have a largely frosted finished for a nice contrast from the mirrored fields, the horse's mane and tail are struck to a brilliant uncirculated finish which sets them off distinctly from the rest of the horse as well as the fields.

Also, the different texture applied to the coin's die for the leather rigging on the horse sets it off well from the rest of the animal and nicely emphasizes the central role of the piece of equipment in the bareback bronc riding event. Note: the tan color seen in my picture is just an artifact of the digital image, the rigging is distinct but not tan on the actual coin.

The coin goes to show that with a little creative thinking, even a "simple" silver coin doesn't have to be plain.

Here's mine, it arrived on Wednesday -- just a week from order to mailbox!

Nice picture!

One of the things RCM does better than any other mint imho is mix textures/finishes on silver coins. This creates great contrast and adds another level of interest on a coin. For example, on the the 2012 Titanic silver $10, you can see there's the polished background, the matte ship and sea, the frosted iceberg, and the polished steam.

These details are hard to capture on pictures. I find the silver coins almost invariably exceed my expectations, whereas the coloured coins often are a little underwhelming. For instance, the Stormy Weather pictures look rather bland, but the coin is exceptionally detailed and interesting. BTW, canadian_coins, your picture of the stormy weather in the group of 7 thread is beautiful!
