I have been looking online to find out if this coin is worth anything. It is a 1837 (I believe) liberty head 1 cent piece but I noticed a small letter engraving close to the maiden's face. The letters appear to be W M N does this mean that the coin isn't real?
that is a countermark. some people (very, very few people) collect these. But to use regular coin collectors, we generally stay away from these countermarks. Oh, and please post a pic!
counterstamp A stamp or impression placed on a coin after it has left the Mint of origin. Counterstamps were frequently used as advertising gimmicks onĀ large centsĀ and other coins. The counterstamp leaves a permanent impression on the metal and may hurt the value of the coin. It may also help the value, as in the case of an Ephriam Brasher counterstamp.
