This coin is graded VF. I'd maybe call it a strong G.

Without even looking at the coin-they might be able to, but the buyers cant always.

More evidence for why ungraded coins shouldnt have grades and let buyers decide for themselves.

I don't think its that they can't grade correctly. After all how can they price a coin if they don't know the grade. I think some deliberately overgrade, hoping some unsuspecting buyer will take their grade at face value and overpay for the coin.

Agreed with beagle. Thinking about it I actually don't think its any different than what coin shops do with their raw coins. Gradings all opinion and they may actually believe their grades, but unless its in a reputable slab the grade is always debatable when it comes to market pricing

Major rim dings to boot--that coin isn't remotely worth what they're asking. What would I offer--$10? As with IHCs on the Bay, it's become increasingly difficult to filter out the culls and find anything close to problem-free.

I brought it to their attention and this is how they replied. I brought another up the next day and they sent the exact same reply. Must get a lot of comments.

Hi, thanks for your interest.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mike and I handle all customer service, inventory, and shipping for madeyourday16.com.
The owner grades and prices the inventory. He has been grading coins for over forty years.
We have sold over 15,000 coins in the last two years alone.
If you have a chance take a look at our feedback score and read some our current customers comments.
We also offer a no questions asked return policy including the return postage.
We want you to be happy with your purchases not frustrated.
The carded coins are scanned and in a lot of cases gives a poor representation of the actual coin. Taking photos is an option but is extremely time consuming. We do however take photos of all our certified coins, because the plastic holders do not scan very well. Thanks again.

Have a great day,
Mike

So--he's gotten it wrong for 40 years? Boilerplate responses like this crack me up; it's as if he's a huge corporation--distanced from the buyer--who cannot handle questions individually? whatever.

He should also get a scanner that doesn't remove details from the coins!

Many raw coins are vastly overgraded on ebay. I've bought from that seller before and while a huge % of their coins are overgraded they are pretty good about haggling and many are BO option. So while 98% of their coins aren't worth looking at, every now and then you can find a reasonably graded one and they are very willing to deal when engaged.

As my posts indicate, I am not an advocate of sellers overgrading and overpricing in order to induce "suckers" to vastly overpay. But that seller has been useful to me anyway. At least I haven't seen evidence of them altering coins like some do. Some sellers are on the "wary list", while others are on the "no fly list".

I do wish more ebay sellers would be reasonable with grading and pricing, and not waste everyone's time looking at their ridiculous listings. But then some of those sellers sell a lot of coins anyway. If I had a nickel for every buff I've looked at that claimed XF40 yet had no horn at all... LOL I'd have a boatload of nickels.

At coin shows I've offered to sell them one that is better than theirs at $20 less - when I've seen ridiculous grading examples. Funny how they never want to buy!

I took a "replica" gold pendant to a show to sell for "gold melt" last year and saw one dealer displaying the same thing in a case. He was asking "real coin price" for his - which was a blatant attempt to rip-off - the coin was considerably smaller than a "real one". I offered to sell him "mine" at half what he was asking ( which was still way above melt ) and he obviously refused - I told him he knows that it is not a real coin and should be kicked out for such a blatant attempt to rip-off/steal. He ran away and was not a native English-speaker so he even tried the "no understand" thing to deflect. He did have some real gold coin pendants along side it as well. I mentioned it to the guy running the show. Didn't see the guy there the next day.
