Commems with all the great things you have to go along with your coins I was wondering if you had ever seen this set or if you happened to have one

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1995-CIVIL-...em4cf150cd4f

Its the civil war half dollar set young collectors edition. Was this some sort of attempt to get younger people into coin collection or civil war history by the mint?

I've seen these before. It does seem like an attempt to get young collectors involved. But, not for $50.

@basebal21: Yes! I even have a couple in my collection.

The US Mint introduced its first "Young Collectors" Set in 1993 with the release of a set containing the Bill of Rights half-dollar. Over the years, they've released a number of these (and similar) sets, additional "Young Collector" sets include:

  • 1993 World War II
  • 1994 World Cup Soccer
  • 1995 Civil War Battlefields
  • 1996 Atlanta Olympics (4 different half-dollar sets)
  • 1996 Smithsonian Institution (w/ silver dollar)
  • 1998 Black Revolutionary Patriots (w/ silver dollar)
  • 2008 Bald Eagle

The Mint has also released a number of "Coin and Stamp" sets and "Coin and Medal" sets.

If folks are interested, I can do a few posts on them.

BTW: The $50 price tag on the ebay lot you referenced is high -- likely trying to capitalize on the Civil War's current sesquicentennial. If interested, you should be able to find one for $25 or less.

Hope this helps!

Commems I would love it if you decided to do a post on them. It seems to be a rather random collection of what they chose to include for that series with the 2008 being brought back sometime after they had stopped if your list is complete. Were these popular?
