I think I know what he's talking about - his vision impairment had actually helped him sort the coins
Why do I know? I have practically the same situation. My vision is around -8 diopters (I think the American equivalent is 20/1000 or something like that). This means that for pretty much all practical tasks I have to use my glasses; this also means that without my glasses, my best vision distance is around 3 inches, which is basically equivalent to a 3-4x magnification in terms of visible details (and that's a lot when it comes to tiny varieties and/or appreciating tiny design elements).
...I don't really want to correct my vision. I'm fine as it is with my glasses and the magnification effect when I put them down is just another bonus. Then again, I'm only 20 so maybe I'll be thinking differently when I'll be 60
