Just had the two cataracts removed. For nearly 50 years all I needed to do to look at coins is to remove my glasses. Now I can see things clearly far away but upclose - not very good. I'm using 2.75 reading glasses with a magnifying glass under a strong light and the best I can make out is the date. Looks like the days of spreading the coins out to look through them may be gone.
Today is the first day I have tried to look at a few rolls of nickels and pennies. This was not expected on my part so I never discussed it with the surgeon. How have any of you adapted to life after cataract surgery?

I have no experience with this problem myself but I do know that we have at least one member with significant vision impairment. I believe that he has a camera system that allows for the real-time display of an enlarged image on his computer monitor.

I think I know what he's talking about - his vision impairment had actually helped him sort the coins
Why do I know? I have practically the same situation. My vision is around -8 diopters (I think the American equivalent is 20/1000 or something like that). This means that for pretty much all practical tasks I have to use my glasses; this also means that without my glasses, my best vision distance is around 3 inches, which is basically equivalent to a 3-4x magnification in terms of visible details (and that's a lot when it comes to tiny varieties and/or appreciating tiny design elements).

...I don't really want to correct my vision. I'm fine as it is with my glasses and the magnification effect when I put them down is just another bonus. Then again, I'm only 20 so maybe I'll be thinking differently when I'll be 60

This is of interest to me.

I'm profoundly near-sighted in my left eye to the point that without vision correction I can clearly see objects like coins and small screws larger-than-life - a distinct advantage. The right eye is somewhat near-sighted. And my opthalmologist tells me that I, too have the beginning of cataracts, but it may be years away before I need surgery. Let's hope so.

pls, I have the same issue. I'm extremely near sighted but have observed that if I take my glasses off I can see amazing details on coins similar to if they were put under a 5x loupe.

The coin shop owners always look perplexed when I push a contact lens to the left to examine each coin ...

Where I went for my cataract operation they are presently doing about 20,000 a year. Of course that includes other eye operations such as lazer corrections for near and far sightedness.
For my eyes I had to choose being able to see fantastic in the distance and needing reading type glasses or just the opposite. Doing many things outdoors, shooting guns, archery, etc. I decided on seeing in the distance. Today after about a year everything over 5 feet is fantastic. Need reading glasses for close ups. A neighbor of mine had the lazer stuff for near sightedness done not long ago and now sees everything all the other neighbors are doing all the time.
If I try reading dates on coins without glasses, they start to come in a little but not sure if that is the way it is supposed to be. I love the clearness and the color brightness.
I'm supposed to go back for eye exams once a year to see how all is coming along. Great Hospital and fantastic doctors.
Only thing I complained about was them sending me home last visit after the eye stuff they put in. Couldn't drive home for hours.
Rest in Peace

Ironically I broke the bridge between the lenses today on the way to a 2-day, out-of-town reunion. So I'm running around without the glasses in a world that looks as if it were painted by Monet. Lucky for me, I'm not driving.
