1925 George V Gold Half Sovereign Or What?

enzeno Valued Member United States 72 Posts	Posted 06/21/2012 9:04 pm Hello! I have come across what appear to be a Half Sovereign gold coin. However, the dimensions are incorrect. It weighs 5.1 grams, instead of the 4 or 8 you'd expect from the half/sovereign. Its also approximately 23 millimeters in diameter. It is from 1925, has no mint mark. Here are pictures - ANY help is greatly appreciated!! Report this Post to the Staff

vb3347 Valued Member United States 230 Posts	Posted 06/21/2012 9:19 pm Unfortunately, I don't think it's real, as you said sovereigns should either weigh 4 or 8 grams... Also, I'm almost certain that the 1/2 Sovereign was not minted in 1925. The full sovereign is I think only 20 or 21 mm, not 23 mm. Because of gold's density, a 23 mm gold coin should weigh significantly more than 5.1 grams (unless it's paper thin). Edited by vb3347 06/21/2012 9:22 pm Report this Post to the Staff

You are absolutely correct, South Africa did mint a 1/2 Sovereign for 1925, I was only thinking of the United Kingdom. Regardless, after doing a bit more research, I have found out the full sovereign (8 grams) has a diameter of 22.05 mm and a thickness of 1.52 mm So your coin still seems a bit light to be .917 gold (to me), but I am by no means sure. Perhaps someone out there is a better mathematician than me and can figure out exactly whether your coin is the right density for gold or not. Report this Post to the Staff
