Got 2 Vimy toonies today from the corner store; attendant had a roll of them and I tried to buy them off of him but he refused, saying he'd be out of change for the day.

I'm thinking about raiding my change jar for misc toonies to go trade him for.

loonielewy: You are most probably correct. Unfortunately, I have only gotten nickel dollars as change (as opposed to silver dollars).

Are you talking recently?
I pedaled an ice cream bike in the early eighties and every time the kid paid with a nickel dollar, I knew the piggy bank was hit up. The dollar bill was used way more. What I'm trying to say is I didn't see alot of them back then, so I wonder where you are getting these in change now. Cudo's to you for getting them, I would love to get a few that way.

Khatt, go for it.
Also, I stand with Loonielewy on the nickel dollar thing. Banks don't just give them out anymore.

Being American, I don't know exactly what's considered unusual in circulation in Canada, but I'm always happy to learn.
The other day I was in a small restaurant on Vancouver Island and I noticed a colorized quarter in the tip jar. I was under the impression that they're uncommon in circulation, or am I mistaken?

Numisma, were you by any chance in Victoria or Nanaimo? I would think that the "coloureds" might be more common down there.I'm farther north on the Island and don't see them atall.

Numisma, yes it is unusual, could you provide details? Some are more unusual or rarer than others.

Numisma, from my experiences the colorized quarters are next to impossible to find. I'm in the Toronto area, and I've never seen any in circulation. There was a colorized twonie, which I did see only one of. I think people realized the 150-anniversary coins were collectible and hoarded them as soon as they saw them.

Torcan, I think he might have seen a say, War of 1812 or Breast Cancer quarter. The colourized 150 quarters are next to impossible to find. Also, I live in Toronto, so the coins are harder to find because of a big demand.

(edit) I stand corrected. Even the War of 1812 quarters are next to impossible to find in colour.

I stand corrected again. I have only found 2 of the War of 1812 coins, coloured.
