I do not believe it is a fad. And as pointed out, coins will be "damaged" regardless of people liking toned coins or not.

I always look for eye appealing felt case toner SAEs at coin shows and have purchased five or six in the past few years. Unfortunately, too much exposure will result in a coin going right past the vivid greens, reds, blues, and violets all the way to sooty black.
