I'm new to coin collecting and now I'm trying to learn about toning. I think these are considered toned coins, but I'm not sure. Am I on the right track at all? Also, is there a die error common with 1954 Washington quarters? Hard to see in the horrible scanned picture, but there is a raised line coming out of the bottom left rim, almost perpendicular.

Sorry about the scanned pics. I'm working on getting a usb scope. The coloring on the Franklin is a bit redder in hand.

Your coins show typical toning of silver coins due to lack of circulation. Toning often occurs in the areas protected from abrasion such as around the rims and in between the raised letters and numbers.

Most toning that people like are of vibrant colors, or hues of rainbow colors. Your Franklin may develop some if it is starting to show red or pink but it will take decades and may just turn dark.

Her are a few examples

Heavy dark toning due to prolonged exposure and little circulation

Here is a colorful one that has a range of color that the photo does not capture well.

And here is an example of a "circulated cameo" where the toning brings out the features well.

I'm guessing these are ugly toned? Are pretty toned colorful, like reds and blues?

Pretty! I'm trying to learn about the coins that I have. Also learning what I need to look for when I decide to add to the collection. I have a few morgans that are really dark, almost black. I didn't think those were considered toned.
