Is this something I should steer away from or is it OK to buy something like this?Is there some down side to something like this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Oz-SOLID-...em2ebf917621
Any pointers or tips,What not to buy and things to stay away from. Thanks in advance. What I seem to gravitate to are the poured loaf type bars.Love being able to hold them and feel the weight with out fear of a finger print. All I have so far is 4 oz.It's not much but it's a start

There's no refiner stamped on the bar. If you are buying bars stick with the major brands. Johnson Matthey, Sunshine and Englehardt will not let you down when you go to sell.

That seller looks to be legit, he has 100% feedback and offers a return. But I NEVER buy off ebay and probably never will. I still have to learn some stuff about bars, but generally I wouldn't buy a "hand made" bar. I would stick to known company's like silvertowne, engelhard, JM etc. Good luck with you silver collection

I'd avoid it, personally, for the following reasons:
  • It's not a recognized name, which may not matter to you but would probably matter to whomever you tried to sell it to down the line.

  • The current bid price is already well above spot.

Tough call. I'd shy away from it, myself. But then again, I've purchased many generic rounds w/out much thought, and they weren't from any known mint.

I only just started collection May 1st, I have a very old 1kg matthey garett bar, at least 31 years old as they became johnson matthey in 1981, I have main brands "morgans" "silvertowne" ect in 10 oz and 1oz bars, but I tend to buy alot of gold and silver collectors coins as I belevie they seem to have dual values, as collectors coins/face value,as well as PM's content.

I love the odd looking 1 off bars, and that 4oz looks well made (maybe a little too nice?) though i'd still most likly consider buying that for that price 15% premium roughly?
Considering I have watched people pay $4 for a silver gram +4.95 postage $8.95 for something worth 91-94c last 3 months, dont quite understand how it will ever be worth that in melt, unless silver goes up to about$ 285 a Oz

Always best to buy smaller in bulk and off load half to bring your price down to a smaller premium, but if it's proven 92.5+ or better then i'd consider it a good buy as I like the uniqueness and size of bar

It looks "off" to me. The listing doesn't mention a polish, which if the seller truly "made" the bar I think he would want to mention the time he spent polishing it. It just looks plated or something. The stamping on the bar is HUGE and very even and there's no metal displacement or evidence of being cast. I could be wrong but I would NOT purchase this bar even if someone gave me the money to do it.

I also would avoid bars of this type and would stick to the major producers like Englehard, JM, Sunshine, Pamp Suisse, Credit Suisse, SilverTowne, etc. When selling a bar, anyone buying it needs to be able to recognize it easily and hand-made bars are not easily recognized. Authentication of the purity of the bar could be a significant problem.
