Hello,

I purchase this coin few days ago. It is 4 tari 1590 Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem from Malta. There is no photo of this coin on internet. I heard that is valuable coin.
If anybody have some catalog with more info about value and mintage.

I found this:

Soon after, his accession as Grandmaster, Hugues Verdalle (1582-95) found the Treasury of the Order almost bankrupt because the civil wars which had been raging in France[10] had prevented any money flowing to Malta from the French provinces. So it was decided in Council on 9th [p.62] July, 1590 to resort again to fiduciary coinage "per sovvenire alle necessità del Comun Tesoro." An amount of 6,000 scudi of copper was to be minted, but the Grandmaster was empowered to mint more than that amount if he deemed it necessary. [11] Verdalle, however, seems to have minted no more than 6,000 scudi of copper. [12] The Grandmaster's copper coins were the most varied to date, consisting not only of the fiduciary four and two tarì pieces, but also of carlini, cinquine, grani, three-piccioli pieces and piccioli. [13]

Thanks.

I'm probably wrong but the wearing on this coin makes it look like the 5 in 1590 could possibly be a 6. I no nothing about these coins however so it is just the way it looks to me.

The ANS has one in their collection; there's no pic, but the description matches yours.

Unfortunately, I've no catalogue for this time period, so can;t tell you how rare it is.

I doubt there'll be much info on mintages from that far back, for a country that no longer exists.

Very nice coin indeed. Although I couldn't tell you anything about value. Link you posted from auction shows price of 812 us dollars. You can go from there but you should keep in mind that is just auction price and that we do not know if that coin was sold and for what sum of money. Plus you should keep in mind that your coin is in much worse condition than one on auction. Overall its very nice coin to have in collection

Greetings

Hi, this is a loubenx de verdalle coin, 1590, 4 tari. sometimes they are countermarked by other grandmasters. Are you willing to sell it? if yes I'm interested.

I have sold this coin in 2012 for 444$.

Probably today it will catch higher price.
