It's been too quiet on this discussion board today, so I thought I'd post one of my Commodus coins. I purchased this Denarius mainly for the detail of the portrait. But even though the reverse is missing the vast majority of the legend, I still like the overall appearance. I have it attributed at RIC 86 struck at Rome in 183/4 AD:

Commodus-As-Pax

OBV: M COMMODVS ANTON AVG PIVS, laureate head right
REV: TR P VIIII IMP VI COS IIII P P, Commodus as Pax standing left, togate, holding branch & cornucopia, hexagonal shield at foot
3.42g, 17mm

Nice piece to take it's place in a portrait set.

How far down the road are you in building a portrait set?

Not very far. I have four different portraits of Commodus, from very young to handsome to old and haggard. The coins cover a range 14 years, from AD 177 to 191. This may be the best portrait, but my favorite is an AE As struck in AD 181.

I have to take exception labeling the reverse figure as Commodus. He did have some reverses where he identified with a god but I don't see this as more than the standard personification. Commodus is one of those emperors impossible to represent properly with a single coin. That is why I did the page with my favorites. I could not pick just one.

Well, if you know me, I'm fairly well pegged on this forum as, shall we say, frugal, so I did not pay that much for this coin. As I said earlier, I have four Commodus Denarii and one AE As, most of which cost me under $20. This one was only slightly more.

dougsmit: I read your notes and illustrations on Commodus.
Very informative, new information for me!
I would suggest everybody on this thread read your notes on Commodus.
