1908 d Barber quarter, wondering the authenticity and grade. It was a raw purchase from an ebay seller. Weight is good, right on the money. and my camera phone doesn't ever capture luster :( Both sides have luster, although the reverse has much more.

Thanks for looking, and I appreciate any grade help.

It looks genuine.

You said the weight is correct.

Is it magnetic?

Did you try the tissue test?

The grade looks to be AU58/55

not magnetic. 6.24 grams. I used toilet paper, if I did it correctly it seems it passes the test. I'm pretty sure its genuine. My first barber so I can never be to skeptical.

Anyways, thanks for your grade input! Hopefully a few more graders come by :)

One takes a single sheet of toilet paper and places it over top of the raw coin. If the reflected light through the paper is white, the coin can be assumed to be silver. Any darker reflected color (although it will be a subtle change) tends to indicate the coin is of a different composition.

I'm guessing a TPG would wimp out on this coin and call it AU55-58 as well. There's just enough "wear" at the wingtips to throw it. ANACS went that way when calling this one I submitted AU58:

1908-D-Barber-Quarter

1908-D-Barber-Quarter

Still got mad money on the resale for the color, though.

It is - to me - a slam dunk at 55.

Looks really sweet to me...is the edge reeding right? It seems to have fewer reeds (larger gaps, even though spaced equally apart)? Maybe it is just envy on my part?

I would not know if the reeding is correct though they do seem to be spaced far apart. The coin appears to have a grade of around AU-55/58. The coin looks like it may have been overdipped but that may just be in the pictures. Nice coin nonetheless!

The reeding seems OK to me. I went through a short Barber quarter phase, and remember being struck by the wide reeding by comparison to the Morgans I was used to.

I'd say it's the pictures. Using my phone the color is never right. I don't have a digital camera so I have to settle with camera phone pics for now.
