This coin was identified on a seperate thread, but I do not recognise the metal at all. As anther member pointed out, no coins with this design were minted in gold. However, the coin is not acting as one would expect for other metals, so this threa is to try and clear up the issue, because I dont believe that someone would sell me a gold coin for so little. The design most closely resembles RIV VII 1 261 (2), Claudius II with flaming altar reverse. Here are the pictures, I put a real bit of gold alongside because the pictures didnt show the yellow colour: Heres the reverse before cleaning: http://api10.webresizer.com/session...249951.42511Thanks

This looks perfectly normal for a corroded billon antoninianus for Divus Claudius probably about 1% silver and mostly copper. Gold looks nothing like this.

I assure you, it looks a lot like gold in real life, and look very little like a copper/silver alloy, but ill have a looksee at other examples to see if it could be
EDIT: No coin of this design was minted in billon either

Hi Ben
For some reason I'm not seeing your pictures on this post, but you can probably have it tested for gold at most any coin shop.

Hi BenByfield, ..... There are many different base metal colors. The mix of Silver and copper / bronze, give it a yellow or gold appearance. I would took your coin down to jeweler, have them rub the edge on a stone and they will put a liquid on it and it will tell you if its gold... I had two coins with a yellow color and one that looked gold, took them down to the jeweler, no gold, we can only hope we find something worth alot... check it out and if its gold we'll be happy for you, if not you have another gold looking coin.....

Thanks, yes, I see the pictures havent come through...Anyway, if it is gold then Woohoo, if its not gold then I can just pretend it is, aye?
Now the issue of finding a jeweller who isn't an arse that will charge me a ton of dough to find out I have a chipped lump of copper...

As I said yesterday, I can almost guarantee your coin is not gold. But for your assurance, take it to any jeweler. Most will take a rub it on a stone and apply an acid to the rub. If it's gold, it will turn a certain color. Otherwise, no color at all. I have ask jewelers for this type of assistance both here in the U.S. and in Spain. All have been very cordial and happy to assist. Good luck. As Eng5858, we hope the best for you.
Regards,

Your coin is not gold, when you polish a copper or bronze coin it takes on a golden color. Gold does not wear and does not tarnish or become black no matter how long it has been buried. If you are thinking of collecting ancients, than you should read about them. There is so much great information on the web that will help you. There are also people on this forum like Dougsmith that have been collecting for 50 years or more that are more than happy to give their advice, as long as you are willing to listen. Check out this website you will learn a lot from it. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith

Photos please. Even with a mobile phone, a decent photo ought to be possible.
