Picked this up in a mixed lot with some Buffalo nickels. It's a bit rough.

Sure looks like an N1 to me. I overlaid it with an N1 and N2 form PCGS and it matches the N1. On the N2, the 1 is further to the left.

I'm not completely convinced it is an 1823. If it is then yes it is the overdate On the N-2 the 1 is further RIGHT compared to the point of the bust.

Could it be 1820 over 19?

I too am not convinced it is an 1823 but the "3" could have had the metal smashed and moved around. Better magnification?

Not the best specimen, but it sure looks like 23. What other dates should I compare it to, 1829, 1828?

I agree that it is a "3". For reference, here's my 1823 (no overdate) and the font seems to match well. PG

It just seems to me that the top half of the "3" on the OP coin is narrower than that seen on paleoguy's 23. Also the shape of the opening in the top of the 3 is wrong. It seems much smaller.

The center point of the 3 is clear in this larger photo. I'm leaning towards 23.

It looks like enough of a 3 that I'll keep it in that spot in my album. Eventually it will get replaced.
