For fun I going to post over the next 12 days. The dirty dozen, 12 different types of common Roman coins. Early this year I got some coins, want to see if I can get all 12 types out of this hoard, a lot of them needed cleaning, so I think I'm ready to go... I've been on dougsmits website so I'm going to follow his info. The first one is the Fallen Horseman...( you can go to his link and read ahead, great info...) Most of you seasoned Ancient dudes just play along....  ...and please play along, post pic's, why you bought the coin and maybe how much you paid for the coin.... also for the new Ancient coin dudes,( that's me to) you may learn and see how much these coins cost...... (disclaimer, I attributed these coins they maybe wrong..  ...)  Constantine ll 351-355..AD. Soldier spearman, fallen horseman AE2.... Constantinople mint 20mm x 3.68g. I paided $2 for this   Constantius Gallus... fallen horseman BSIS mint 22mm x 3.91.. I paid $2 for this coin...

To be honest, until we had a discussion on this type of coin about a year ago, I never found this type to be appealing. However, Doug and Bobbyhelmet convinced me otherwise and I can now see the artistic quality. I own several "Fallen Horseman" types, but my favorite is probably this Constantius Gallus RIC VIII 97. I paid a whopping $13.95 including shipping.  My second favorite is a Constantius II RIC VIII 361. I paid $12.65 including shipping:  |

I have a few of these in my 'not so great' pile of semi-cleaned. You know they type: obverse looks promising ... half the reverse is rubbed off. Or the other way around. Should see if any are worth photographing.  Great start Eng! Edited by oxos

Both of the OP coins are Constantius II. Constantine II died before the first Horseman fell; Gallus was never Augustus and always was shown with a bare head. So far I consider the quoted prices appropriate for the coins shown. I have seen nice examples of rare varieties go up to $500 and a perfect Magnentius falling horseman might bring $1k if a perfect one exists (I doubt it does). There are hundreds of thousands of partly identifiable FH coins not worth a whole dollar. That is some range!

After reading Doug's post, I realized that I put the wrong coin in the second set of pic's, I have about 15 differnt fallen horseman. The second set is Constantine ll, Siscia..... mint, 20x18mm.. 4.63g..... This pic is Constantius Gallus Soldier spearman, fallen horseman, BSIS mint........22mm x 3.91g.....  Nice big coin with fair details.....  |

Slow day on the board today, everyone getting ready for the 4th. Out here in the N.W. our weather been very cool, windy, while the rest of the nation is on fire, it doesn't seem to bad.... ... The next coin of the dirty dozen is two soldiers and two standards. reverse...I have many of these,like oxos said some are nice on one side or the other. Hope you all will have a safe and happy,fun 4th..... Just like the rest of you have said, most of my coins of this type are not in the best of conditions. Some have good obverse and some a good reverse. My best example of this type is a Constantine II struck at Siscia, RIC VII 237.  |

This is Constantius II. There will be another N between the I and the you on a Constantine.

Here is my best example of one of these; from an uncleaned lot of ten ($21.50) that have been soaking now for 5 months. I could be wrong though. Nice... isn't it?  |

thanks for sharing these eng, I almost started a similar thread myself. if these are all form an uncleaned lot I think you're doing a good job!
hey doucet, I think you may have a keeper under that grime...looks like it is well centered, may have several readable letters, and a readable mint mark!
