I wasn't in the market, but I was recently offered an American Buffalo gold coin. It was a brand new 2012 in "original mint plastic." An absolutely beautiful coin. Unfortunately, not in my budget.
This got me thinking about storage. I've seen and/or occasionally purchased a few "nicer" pieces of bullion, typically small bars and coins, that were cut from a larger sheet of thermally sealed plastic. I never buy and flip bullion but I can certainly see how keeping a coin in the original plastic would be good for resale value.
However, as a long term buy and hold stacker, I have some concerns about trying to keep any fine silver bullion coin in mint plastic over the long haul. Also, pure gold coins like that American Buffalo or a Canadian gold Maple seem like they too would be extremely vulnerable to accidental damage if left only in the original mint plastic.
My preferred method for storing my nicest coins would be air-tite capsules. How much value (if any) would be lost by taking these coins out of the mint plastic? What do you all think?
