Hello Everyone,

Just opened a 1955S penny roll that's been sealed over 50 years. Found another more minor Wheat-bud error on left wheat-stock. Turned it over and found minor doubling of the date and filled in area between B and E in Liberty. Is this a "BIE" error? Guess you might call it a BIE-BUD if so!

Again uploaded images go though optimizer so some detail is lost, smaller file size.

Thank you
Al

They are called DIE CHIPS. Looks like Machine Doubling, or light angle.

Thank you for the reply, sure are a lot of die chips in the 50's. About 0.5% of the 50's pennies from the rolls I've opened in the last week have them, including 5 buds from a roll of 58P's. I notice scans seem to make the doulbing look more pronounced than they look under 10 power. Is that what you mean by light angle? I usually see the elevation lines better under low light as the brightness makes the pennies seem so frosty.

To start, I have no idea what "bud" or "elevation line" mean and I've been doing this for a number of years.

The minor die chips in LIBERTY are rather common in late wheat cents.

The "doubling" you see in the date is common Machine Doubling.

Bud refers to the enlarged bud-like structure on the wheat stalk. Elevation is the difference in surface height of the coin and if the relief changes suddenly it forms a line not a slope. In yesterday's post about 1958 wheat-bud the die chip appears to have the outline and structure of the wheat, but larger. As America ages new terms are added to Webster's all the time. Note I use " the first time I use the term as is scientific writing terminology. This keeps from having to describe in detail each time it's mentioned.

See the Glossary to the left of the forum under Navigation, they are the terms used to describe just about everything for numismatics.

There are many useful sites mentioned there.

First-thing-first:
Now for some advice:
1:I suggest you go to this post;https://goccf.com/t/123151: and check out some of the links. As you do try to pick up some of the terminology so you will be better equipped to express what you see on your coins.

2:C. D. Daughtrey is being modest when he said "I've been doing this for a number of years.".It's more like three decades. He's one of the pro experts who share their knowledge with us here.If he has no idea what you are referring to it's a good bet you are using improper terms.

3:Most of us have learned much here.We all are willing to help you learn so that you will have more enjoyment in this hobby.

Keep looking and please keep posting.

It looks like my last post was taken the wrong way. In today's culture it seems when there's a problem people worry about it not being their fault. I try to solve the problem. I'd never get elected to office because I tell it like I see it. I throw out information, it's for you to listen or not. After a carrer as a Geologist I was a teacher for over 20 years. I've been collecting coins for over 30 years. I collect, it's not a business to me! I'm new to copper and error coins. I post to learn, no matter how old you are there are new ideas and things to learn. Many teens and the old "know it all." The terms I use are in the dictionary, but I have no problem explaining to you. I read the post as it was written, not understanding the terms I'd used. I answered the questions. I am having trouble understanding and using some of the options in this forum. Please excuse any misunderstandings, I may not know how to respond or upload scans correctly. What's common to you may be new to me. When I read the reasons for this forum, I thought it was for education. There should be no dumb questions. If you don't enjoy the humor in my posts say so. I think humor keeps people interested and happy or "a la Rodger Rabbit" don't be a sourpuss!
