Seller actually thinks this is a mint error, not an adolescent alteration. The funniest part of the listing is that they also show an unaltered reverse for comparison, just in case someone might think all large cents said ONE . Look at the price for this rarity.

Also, they said there have been no altercations with the coin since they got it, which is good because large cents fight dirty.

That's funny. The posting engine put a instead of redacted

No, it's not funny. Neither is trying to get around the purpose for it. Don't do this again.

Mods- Sorry about that.

They probably did that because this is a family friendly forum, and inappropriate language isn't allowed.

That's probably a fairly accurate shipping price IF (and that's a big if) the coin were to sell for that price. I know it costs me $10 to ship a $300 coin through USPS First Class Mail with insurance and signature confirmation (a requirement ebay has protect the seller).

Apparently these are quite common. I once bought a lot of not so great cents and wouldn't you know, the only date I really needed from the bunch had it.

Is it a legitimate error? I mean, the monosyllable was not a word that was even publishable at the time and it doesn't seem like the kind of error that would happen.

Most certainly not an error or a prank by mint employees. That would have caused public outcry. Whether these were made by bored soldiers or schoolboys is a mystery. What's strange is that it's always on large cents, not other denominations or small cents.

If the pictures are a good guide, the "altercated" cent being offered even looks a bit smaller diameter than an authentic one.

Does anyone want to accept the challenge of making an entire large cent set that only has these alterations?
