1845 Large Cent On An Oversise Planchet

OldSkoolMadSkilz Pillar of the Community United States 2077 Posts	Posted 07/05/2012 12:59 am I have an 1845 cent that is noticeably bigger than it should be. The size of large cents changed in 1839 (I think). Would the mint keep unused large planchets around that long? Is this type of error common? Report this Post to the Staff

Comparing it side by side with a regular one, it's actually like a big 1845. All features are bigger, not just the size. I think it may be an early counterfeit. Question is, why would anyone counterfeit a penny? If they counterfeited a dime they would have increased their profit tenfold. And why would they make it oversize? Report this Post to the Staff

I'd think making a semi key date they'd be able to make a profit, but still fly under the radar. I'm thinking expand-o-ray experiment.
