Looks to be a Spanish cob, if it's not a replica. I don't know anything about cob coinage to be of more help, sorry.

This has the look of a Potosí 8 Reales cob coin. However, I cannot find a picture of a 1776 one and the lettering does not match up with any of the older ones that I have found. Hopefully, someone will be able to give you information as to its authenticity. My initial feeling is that this may not be authentic, but I am far from being an expert in these.

Anyone in the forum that has experience with Spanish Cobs?

I did some search on the internet and it is very similar to the Potosi Mint. The date is not consistant as it shows 776 but according to what is mentioned on the internet the mint operated until 770 eventhough they mentioned that they continued making Cob years after.

In addition, There is strong similarity in the pictures but there are differences in the details of the Lions and Castles....this to me points to a possible replica or fake....but I do not know.

So if there is any one that can shed some light on this it would be greately appreciated....even if it was a replica this has been tons of fun.

I may even pick this up seriously as a hobbie.

Thank you Susan I agree with your assesment. I looked at the Potosi mint also and the dates and pictures are not the same.

Hopefully someone can help us out some more.

What is the weight? I'll check against the image against my reference later tonight, once I get home from work.

Semita... I don't know anything about these but I did a search and found two sites that may lead you in the right direction.

I assume you mean "0.3 ounces". Anyway, at 9 grams, it isn't close to the "correct" weight for an 8 reales should be around 27 grams. Even though it seems to be seriously clipped, it still seems too low. That, and the oddly-shaped lions, make me almost certain it's a reproduction of some sort.

Here are the main output mints for cob-style silver coins, together with the last date given in the catalogue:
- Mexico City (catalogued under Mexico), issued until 1734
- Lima (catalogued under Peru), issued until 1751
- Potosi (catalogued under Bolivia), issued until 1773; one known specimen has an "incorrect date" of 1778
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
