I know this copper coin has no numismatic value, but my Great Grandfather insisted on carrying it in his pocket until the day he died. It appears French or British, too me (my GGF was a Francophile) with a barely discernable bearded man's profile on the obverse, and what may be a standing eagle? on the reverse.

If anyone has any guesses, I'l love to hear them.

You're coin is definately French. The obverse of the coin has an image of Napoleon III on it and the words, Napoleon III Empereur. The bottom of the obverse is where you would find the date. On the reverse is an eagle and the words, Empire Francais, and on the bottom is the denomination Cinq Centimes. I have the same one. Mine is dated 1855.

Hi there Hunter20ga

This is one of mine hope this will help

Although the Diameter will tell us what denomination it is I just cant see the date and mint mark

As this design was used in the 1 C , 2C, 5C and the 10 centimes Designs in Napoleon 111 Reign from +/- 1853 to 1870

One other thing to enhance the lettering one could put this coin in some extra virgin olive oil to bring out the lettering so you could see them, got that advice on here and it did work on my copper coins

Thanks, everyone. That coin of yours, Sinbad, really helps. The coin is about 25 mm in diameter. I'll try the extra virgin olive oil.
