So as always, I am browsing the bay for upgrades... I usually see a seller who in my opinion is obsessed with the words "MONSTER TONING" lol... which are usually tagged with an outrageous price! I decide to click on one of them today... then over to "see other items"... then small cents etc etc. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Small-Cents...rarecoins865is Lonnie and his/her rare coins serious? maybe its just me..... How did they even get that amount of feedback?! who's buying?!

Joeturbo26, The ebay Buy It Now prices do seem on the high side, however I've noticed that on every Buy It Now price that I've ever seen. Is there a common seller policy on Buy It Now prices, for example, is it catalog price plus 30% ? I've wondered for a long time whether Buy It Now price is really 'People that have More Money than Sense' price or "I Gotta Have It at Any Price" price. The Germans call it the 'Lover's Price'. However, at least one can be relatively sure that ebay isn't going to have viruses lurking on the site. I use Site Advisor www.siteadvisor.com and its community Reviews to check on every site unknown to me before I visit it. Paying a price premium on ebay would be cheaper to me than getting a virus from a website and eradicating it.

Pertinax, for ebay, I can only speak about my own selling experience and "buy it now"... Which you can read an interesting thread here: https://goccf.com/t/121040&whichpage=2However, ebay doesn't say or dictate any specific price for buy it now (BIN). With that said, I know many people buy with "lovers price". Personally I don't see much there to fall in love with... Especially when none of them are difinitively graded, and the seller has such strong convictions in his/her wording! To me that's a total turn off!

BIN will always be higher then auctions since its basically I will only see it for this price and am willing to sit on the coin until I get that price. It also plays into people who dont want to wait for auctions to end. I always have the option on my auctions for that just in case someone wants to, have never just listed a BIN price though
Personally I dont understand the love affair with the monster toned that currently seems to be happening, but it does leave more clean coins for me so I hope it continues lol

joeturbo26, The thread you quoted is very interesting. Would you care to comment on this scenario ? My neighbour saw a bronze medallion he wanted (he'd not seen one before, but as it was a 20th century commemorative, he thought no reason to think it was rare). The Romanian seller listed it with a BIN of USD 199. That seemed rather a lot to my neighbour and me; plus the seller was in Romania, where there are a lot of scams, though he has apparently got '100% Positive Feedback'. My neighbour asked him through ebay whether he was willing to negotiate, but even a month later hasn't received an answer. The item is still listed. Is it suspicious that he hasn't had an answer ? Could it indicate that the seller doesn't actually own it but just knows where he can acquire it ?

Feedback doesn't mean a whole lot, its very easy to beef up your feedback other than getting it legit. As far as your questions something suspicious could be going on, but it could be as simple as he has no interest in negotiating and didnt feel the need to respond to say so

basebal21, I'm a newbie, I have a lot to learn. How could the seller beef up his feedback other than getting it legit, please ?
How can it be detected ?

How can it be detected ? You can either make multiple accounts and buy and sell from yourself leaving feedback, theres sites you can pay to do it. Theres a lot of ways really. Its not always easy to tell sometimes itll be sloppy and if you look through the feedback there will be identical ones that dont sound like things people would say all the time or be very elaborate with symbols. Theres a lot of ways really but its usually not a huge worry except for buying out of suspect countries. and

Quote: BIN will always be higher then [sic] auctions Not always true. I also collect stamps. An ebay seller placed two auctions at the same time: One for a stamp in VF condition and another for the same stamp in EF condition. The superior condition of the EF stamp was obvious. The VF stamp started at a penny. The EF stamp had a BUY-IT-NOW of $180. I knew from experience that $180 was a very reasonable price for that stamp in that condition, so I jumped on it, while the VF was still at about $25. By the time the auction ended for the VF stamp, the closing price was over $225. Whether it's stamps or coins, I follow several auctions of things I plan to look for in the future just to see what a good price is before I even BEGIN to place bids! (The stamp was a 315 5c Second Bureau Imperf for any stamp collectors out there).

Lars theres always exceptions to every rule and some sellers out there with very reasonable BIN prices, but for the vast majority the BIN will be higher as its what they want and usually its run up a little bit as the trade off for losing out on getting an insane auction price

larsdog, I'm intrigued.
How does one grade stamps, please ?
I thought either a stamp is complete or it's not; either it's used, mounted mint, or unmounted mint; with perhaps difference in postmarks or cancellations.

Judging from this seller's feedback, a_lot of people are buying at his ludicrous prices. I couldn't keep a straight face, selling like that.
