Was checking out the heritage auction, came across this beauty.. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...=30140#PhotoWhat's your opinion on the grading ? Great scans, but to me, I don't think its MS66. I know the US grading companys take the coin and a whole and don't emphasize on our quality indictators, such as the wreath, hand etc. Am I wrong?

This will start a good discussion. It looks great but from the few I've seen in hand, I'd say around MS-64 but I'm new to Aussie coins. All I know is this should go well north of US$1000.

It's a beauty, can't find much wrong with it. When you blow the photo up to max size there are only some very tiny marks. I really don't see why this would not be MS-66.

I'm not sure about MS66, maybe an MS60-61. (In Aussie grades, I'd only go Unc, it's not a choice UN-circulated for mine.)
A couple of marks on the rim, wear marks on the hand, and a spot on the obverse.
Still it appears to have a die rotation as well which is a plus price wise.

Quote: I'm not sure about MS66, maybe an MS60-61. Wow, that's pretty harsh.. I would of thought MS64...But I'm not a professional coin grader. Having said that, I went to the ANDA show on Saturday and viewed maybe 10 of these with grades from UNC-Choice UNC, none as nice as this coin... Peter S Thomas, care to comment on this one grade wise compared to the NGC one... https://www.rarecoin.com.au/product/1080

I will comment. I love it. I love them all. Wish I could afford a choice one right now. I've fallen in love with Aussie coins and need to thin out my US collection so I can afford some more. That said, the toning on the reverse will be a lot more pronounced in hand. Although the wreath and the left hand look better than the previous. Still a bit pricey if you ask me. Take a punt on the heritage one at $1100 and you might catch someone snoozing.

Quote: But I'm not a professional coin grader. Neither am I. That is obvious I think. Now regarding the rarecoin version. I think it is a higher grade than the first one. That said the riders hand still shows wear for mine. So Gem.... nah. Choice maybe. Still please refer to first paragraph after quote.

I can see numerous tiny dings, there are four on the rider's left arm, for instance.

I would have thought no less than MS63 with MS64 more likely, but that depends on your TPG. Minor dings yes, but very nice coin, although toning detracts.

MS66 according to the standards that NGC grade by. You people seem to think there's a standard way of applying the Sheldon system. There isn't. PCGS apply it one way. NGC another. ANACS another. Everyone on this forum probably another. That coin would be choice unc in Australia every day of the week.
The flip side of this coin is two Centenary Florins in NGC slabs I saw at the Melbourne ANDA that were no-graded for hairlines. The dealer who had them was going to crack them out and sell them as choice uncs. Go figure.

I don't have enough experience with NGC grading to say for sure whether it has been overgraded, but it looks like a PCGS MS65 from the pics.
Australian standards differ very differently on this coin as Australian graders considers strike paramount for this particular coin and unless it has an almost fully struck up rider it won't grade Gem.
