A neighbour of mine was recently robbed. He is an elderly man and walked in on someone robbing his place. This has got me thinking about security. While we really do not have anything particularly valuable, it would be extremely upsetting to have thieves ransack our home. A friend recently bought an 8 camera cctv system through ebay for around $250 My neighbour is worrried that the thief might come back for what was missed last time, so I suggested such a cctv system. This topic is intended to bring this option to forum members attention and for anyone that knows about CCTV to give tips and hints on selecting and installing a system.

I know Jaycar sell good units at reasonable prices, all recordable on a HDD. (I got the main unit at my shop & attached it to already existing camera's after the previous unit passed away). But if a place is going to get ransacked, it's likely they'll F... the system too. It will have to be strategically placed, in order for it not to be seen. A nice fireproof safe for under $500 will be better. Ideally, an insurance company will cover posessions, but not a nice set of numismatic items (unless you're to insure the entire collection). As far as items you don't want to lose, some will be your collection, others will be memories (photos/videos etc on a backed-up HDD)...what else? A huge amount of other things can be replaced! Just get that collection of photos of your items, possessions, memories & you collection into a safe. A CCTV system is only going to get you so far. Think of all the roberies you see on the news...is it going to help you get stuff back that's already been pawned, palmed or sold off to strangers? My opinion. If you have cash to splash, then do both!

I bought a similar system and eventually gave it away. I had problems with quality and particularly glare. After being burgled eight times, which is counting cars and garage and house, I opted for sensors in every room, a monitoed system, a dog and a sign on every window of the house. I have not been burgled since. You cant beat proper security.

I'm not convinced;
Seen as we're into the hypothetical here with robbery.
Hypothetically, what if burglar is wearing a balaclava. He might choose to wave. What would be the point of capturing that?
Alternatively, if they cost a few hundred bucks, it gives him something else to steal.

Tim, Nothing is foolproof. However with 8 cameras, you would cover outside and inside your home. Anyone approaching wearing a balaclava would stand out to neigbours. Most recorders will also record audio which may also aid in identifying a thief. Even footage of someone with their face hidden might help police catch a thief (eg sex, height, build) so it is still a good deterent

Hi,
I think this is unbeatable... & provides a chance for prevention...
Saw this for $ 100 on a popular auction site... 1x camera with motion detection and mobile phone calling capability. If anything moves it will ring your mobile say iphone and show you the video of the scene plus allow you to speak to the thief as well..
Also it can store a list of mobile numbers so if the first is busy it will move onto the next on the list.

Security is a problem for any collector, I think part of the best setup is anonymity. No-one knows what I have, and those that do know, don't know where I live. Still good locks and screens are a must. This is a bit off topic but it reminds me of a story I heard. A burglar walks into a house. He hears a voice say "Jesus Christ is watching you". He looks around and sees nothing. He then walks into the lounge room and again hears "Jesus Christ is watching you." Again he looks around, this time he sees a parrot on the back of the couch. He asks "Are you the one talking?" The parrot replies "Yes." The burglar thinks to himself, that is pretty impressive and asks the parrots name. "Moses" replies the parrot. The burglar replies that is a strange name for a parrot. To this the bird says "Not as strange as a Doberman named Jesus Christ".

Cameras do not deter crimes. If you want your camera to be effective you'd better hide that, too, because the thief will just end up stealing the evidence. On that note, hide your valuables the same way you would hide a camera.
