It doesn't "produce" detail. It *can't* produce any more detail than you supply with the image in the first place. Seriously, rethink your photo processing workflow.

Sweet pic Joe I'm most impressed and have just ordered 2 of these. Nearly as good as the usb gizmo but easier to use. Thanks for doing the initial research on these

Man, I was all set to invent something like this. As usual, too little, too late. So is this magnifier just one of the many iPhone macro lenses posted on ebay, or did you do a bunch of research and find the perfect one? Or just the cheapest?

Actually the shots look little better than those taken with a very cheap point and shoot using electronic( as opposed to optical) zoom. I Cant see the detail you are pleased with. If you really want to stick with the Iphone then this is what you want ( look at the QX1 thats the one that will allow you to put a real macro lens on your Iphone): http://www.dpreview.com/articles/72...qx1-and-qx30

Hello,
Is anyone aware of any of these iPhone 4S macro lens devices containing an adjustable light source?
The vendor of these devices even acknowledges that attachable lens would block the light coming from the direction of the camera.
I have heard of the availability of ring LED lights but unless it comes standard and already integrated with the macro lens, it seems to me that it would be a hassle to set up and produce consistent results.
When using these attachable lens it appears to me that traditional light sources have to be pointed in at a very small angle w/r/t to the coin's surface from a couple of sides to diminish shadowing.
Any ideas to attack this issue more efficiently are welcomed.

The return for more expensive and dedicated equipment, among other things, is sufficient relief for effective lighting and it's that effective lighting which makes the job of the lens easier. Many point-and-shoot cameras would be capable of far better results if they had sufficient working distance to use appropriate lighting. You're stuck with extreme angles and/or ring lighting (probably of your own design) when you limit yourself to optics with working distances this small.
