What does the number on the back of the bill mean? Specifically the one that is different on every bill.

Is a ten with a 1 on the back worth anything more than face

That usually refers to the plate number. At any given run, its normal for the BEP to use several plates per run.

Oh, and having a low number doesn't give it a marketable premium. But location does, back of the 1988 and 1995 series $1 bills, the BEP experimented with web note printing. The plate number on the reverse will show up on the northeast corner of the word "one" instead of on the bottom. Web notes usually fetch $5-$25 depending on condition. Hope this helps.
